A sea of wine ranged out before me at the biannual gathering of the Languedoc producers. Famous names with hefty price tags, not so famous names jostling to be recognised, hideous labels with great wine inside, great labels with hideous wine inside - everything was there. I had a mission, which I had chosen to accept – to find a replacement for the great Puech Haut. After three very long tiring days I was having coffee with a German Broker who said that the best wine he had tasted all week was at the Grès St Paul winery. He was not wrong - the wines shone like a beacon, they exemplified my complete ideal of Languedoc winemaking.
Back in England I could not believe my notes - surely they could not have been that good - a mistake has been made with a very tired palate. A visit was arranged and off I plodded. There was no mistake, gifted winemaking, fabulous terroir providing immaculate grapes and an eye (in my opinion) for a lovely label. Each wine represented something new yet classical in the Languedoc region, capturing flavours and aromas that shouted Languedoc - perfect.
The wine making team of Jean Phillipe Servière, Phillipe Salasc and Christophe Guirao, create wines of great passion. Robert Parker thinks so too:
THE WINE ADVOCATE - ROBERT PARKER "ANTONIN " An outstanding fruity wine, impressive aromas, velvety texture, excellent, flawless, exceptional weight and length"
Antonin is Coteaux du Languedoc AC and is made from 80% Syrah with 10% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, matured in Barriques -
dependant on the year, the wine stays in the barriques for up to 16 months. This produces a wine that is big and soft with blackberry core fruit and a delightful coffee and herb finish, very approachable.
